Copyrights, Piracy in Tollywood - Vangapandu & Magadheera

I was watching the television commercial and subsequent appeal of Ram Charan Teja, about the efforts that the film-unit has put into this epic of recent times, Magadheera.

The hero appealed to the Telugu audience, not to encourage piracy and honor the copyrights of the creators of the movie.

While I respect his right to protect his rights, I realized the film makers’ double standards when I saw poet Vangapandu Prasada Rao complaining that his song was copied into Magadheera.

The song in question, “Em Pillado, Eldamostava!” is indeed a popular number that created many revolutionary leaders in villages and small towns since ages. Not many would know Vangapandu, but all Telugu audience would have listened to his song sometime.

I think it is unfair on the film unit’s part to use the lyric (even if it is just one line) and that too, use it for shooting filthy romance.

With this, the filmmaker’s request for curbing piracy and upholding copyrights appear to be sham.

Seems, Magadheera’s special effects are not just on the screen. They are off the screen too. Two theaters in the state which were screening this movie have witnessed accidents with reports of loss of life in both the cases.

Quick Gun Murugan – All Hype, No Fire

I haven’t been watching movies for sometime now. But Quick Gun Murugan & its lead actors Rajendra Prasad, Rambha pulled me to the theater.

With all the media coverage and the promo that preceded its release over the past few weeks, I expected it to be great. But, I found QGM full of hype and no fire.

Firstly, it was my fault to expect the QGM to be on par with Rajendra Prasad & Rambha’s Aa Okkati Adakku.

Next, QGM doesn’t have any story that it can bank upon. All that talk on Vegetarian and Non Vegetarian fight was just hype.

Finally, age has caught up with both Rajendra Prasad & Rambha. They neither look funny nor sexy, but just a sorry.

I felt out of place, as the crowd was laughing at non-sense in the name of comedy. Lola kutty’ dialogues, the Tamil accent of English dialogues are passé, I say.

Rajendra Prasad seemed to be with a hangover of his Aa Naluguru kind of roles. He sports a gloomy look throughout the movie.

Mango Dolly Rambha has very little to do in the movie, except for some skin show. There were some news reports that Rajendra Prasad said the same in some interview & that created serious differences between him & mango dolly. She stopped sharing the stage with him since then.

Over all, the director & writer failed in milking a very good theme of Vegetarianism, a great comedian like Rajendra Prasad.

Tollywood & Telangana Lolli

Since the begining of T agitation, Tollywood more or less kept quiet on the T issue, considering their Business interests. Minor aberrations were Chiranjeevi & Mohan Babu's open support to United Andhra.

The only vocal support for T was from small time players like R. Narayana Murthy & Tammareddy Bharadwaja.

Now, a newbie is trying to fish in the troubled waters by stoking T feelings. Saketh (Balu), who is debuting with 'Rosham', is trying to en-cash the T mood by appealing that he be blessed as the first T hero.

Not a bad business idea, to rake in few rupees with such a movie.

Recently an association of T directors was formed, under the leadership of award winning 'Kubusam' movie director. They appealed that there should not be regional feelings in the industry. I didnt understand, why they formed a regional association to suggest that idea ;)

Bapu Bomma

The reference to Bapu’s Sundarakanda in my last entry made me reflect on this legend of Telugu film industry. Bapu is known to capture & display the quintessential Telugu girl in his works. Be it the sketches & paints that he makes or the movies that he made.

For starters, Satti Raju Lakshmi Narayana, known as Bapu, is a famous artist, painter, cartoonist and film maker of Andhra Pradesh. His cartoons are so popular that they are featured in almost all magazines in Andhra Pradesh. His cartoon characters Budugu, Rendu Jella Sita, C Gaana Pesoonaamba are typical Telugu kids. His paintings of mythological characters are brilliant and of distinct style. Of course, talking about Bapu’s movies, we must appreciate Ramana who has been the back bone of the movies & stories with his rib tickling dialogues.

Bapu’s depiction of typical Telugu girl was so famous that, Bapu Bomma (Bapu’s Picture) became synonymous to “Beautiful Telugu Girl”. His films are equally great. Each and every frame of his movies are like a canvas paint and is filled with subtle humor. Starting from Sakshi to the recent Sundarakanda, he has made many great movies that will be remembered by the industry.

All his lady protagonists are brilliant portraits of that day’s woman. I watched many of his movies, countless times. I never get bored watching a helpless lady protagonist Sangeetha in Mutyala Muguu, an equal partner Divya Vani in Pelli Pustakam and a dominant sivangi Amani in Mr. Pellam.

However, when I think about his heroines, I always get surprised that most of them have failed to succeed in the industry.

He took Chandrakala as Sita in Sampoorna Ramayanam. She couldn’t make a big mark in the industry.

Next was Sangitha in Mutyala Muggu. She couldn’t make any big success after that.

Latha was the heroine in Andala Ramudu. No major success for her after that.

Divyavani was so beautiful in Pelli Pustakam, She was not seen around after that.

Amani was superb in Mr Pellam. She quit with in few years after that.

Kasturi/Kaveri was shown in Rambantu. She settled down on TV shows now.

I keep wondering whether this is Bapu’s talent that he can show the Bapu Bomma out of ordinary individuals or is it that his touch is spoiling the luck of the new heroines :)

Magadheera Movie

Crossing all the hurdles, Magadheera is released today. The movie is the second film for hero Ram Charan Teja and was eagerly awaited by the fans.

The movie was in news for the past few days, due to non filmy reasons. There were clashes between fans and police due to political reasons. Hero Ram Charan’s affiliation with PRP is the reason for all the drama at Tirupati, where the midnight screening was not allowed

Magadheera is reported to be a fantasy film, aka Arundhati where the story goes back and forth. The hero Ram Charan and his lady protagonist Kajal Agarwal could not unite in their earlier lives, which was set in 16th century. They reincarnate and meet after 400 years.

Director Rajamouli reported to have crafted brilliant art work and graphics to give a touch of period film to the portions of 16th century story. Music Director MM Keeravani re-mix his own number from Papa Chiranjeevi's Gharana Mogudu. Mumaith Khan does a Disco Shanti in the re-mix of 'Bangaru Kodi Petta' song. Chiranjeevi also shakes a leg along with son Ram Charan in this song.

The producers Geetha Arts spent liberally in not only the making of the movie, but also the promos. Yesterday, the prime time slot on TV9 was full coverage of the making of Magadheera, interspersed with interviews of Ram Charan Teja. Today’s prime time news also was liberally filled with Magadheera publicity.

Krishnam Raju Quits PRP

Rebel Star Krishnam Raju quit Praja Rajyam Party today. Krishnamraju was away from party activities after the assembly elections, where he contested and lost from Rajahmundry

Krishnamraju said that the party could not use his services and thus he is quitting. However, it is understood that, PRP pushed him to contest from Rajahmundry where he did not have any cadre and had to face the toughest opponents like Undavalli (Cong) & Murali Mohan (TDP). The Rajahmundry seat was prestigious for both Cong & TDP and it was rumored that media Moghul Ramoji Rao of Eenadu group funded the expenses of TDP candidate Muralimohan.

Krishnamraju was apparently not happy to go and stand in the middle of that bull fight at Rajahmundry. However, he had no choice as this ‘elder brother’ (that’s what PRP’s Chiranjeevi addresses him) was asked to contest from Rajahmundry.

PRP’s troubles don’t seem to end now. The other cadre who flocked from the dustbins of various parties have already started to leave the camp. The heavyweights like Devender Goud, Peddi Reddy, Tammineni, all set to jump the boat soon.

While it is maverick YSR who must be amused with all this bleeding at TRS, PRP, TDP camps, in a way, Chiranjeevi should also be happy with all this. Because, by now he might have realized that, he built his party with absolutely useless faces, who are eventually going out on their own.

But what happens to Anniyya now? He already gave/took a farewell party to Tollywood & now has nothing much to do in Politics. Somebody should tell him about the importance of having a plan B.

Vijayashanthi to Join Congress

The opportunist of Andhra Politics, Vijayashanthi is all set to quit TRS. The rumor doing rounds is that Ramulamma will join the ruling Congress Party in the state. Past few days, she was in long discussions with Jugga Reddy & Narendra.

It didn’t surprise me, as I was expecting this stunt from our Lady Super Star. I was wondering all these days, how could KCR & his TRS party leaders trust her and took her into the fold and offered her the secretary general’s post.

People and party cadre didn’t understand her drama on the Telangana card. Did anybody remember her playing to the galleries during Junior Doctors strike at Niloufer Hospital? She came on to the news channel live coverageof TV9 & ETV, holding a sick baby and cried foul that the Telangana kids are suffering because of the strike.

However, our Lady Amitabh Bacchan should be lauded for her histrionics, which fooled KCR to give up his coveted Medak seat to her. Known for his acerbic reactions, we have to wait and see what would be KCRs reaction.

Chiranjeevi Party Gets a New Symbol

After the drubbing at the recent hustings, all the opposition parties in Andhra Pradesh started reconstructing their acts. For instance, TDP constructed a wall in place of a gate in its office ;) It was rumored that, party cadre is slipping through the gates, thus a wall is constructed.

Today, Chiranjeevi’s Praja Rajyam Party (PRP) got a new election symbol. PRP’s supremo Chiranjeevi hopes that the new symbol, a rising Sun, will be the dawn of the new political aspirations of the party in the greater Hyderabad elections. As we are aware, rising Sun is a part of PRP’s flag.

In the neighboring state of Tamil Nadu, DMK was already using this symbol. So, it may suggest that PRP may not have any ambitious plans of going beyond Andhra Pradesh.

What amuses me the fact that none of these parties, which lost in the last elections, seems to have understood the reasons for their poor show. It is neither vasthu nor the symbol that damaged their prospects. Its just that they are not in touch with the ground reality.

Sasirekha Parinayam

Krishna Vamsi’s Sasirekha Parinayam ran into financial troubles and did not release as scheduled on Jan 1st. Director Krishna Vamsi has great expectations on this movie and he rated it on par with earlier successes like Gulabi, Ninne Pelladatha, Murari and Khadgam.

The movie is about Sasirekha (Genelia) who hates the financial excesses of traditional arranged marriages. She runs away from her scheduled marriage in Amalapuram. On her way meets the hero and the rest is how Sasirekha Parinayam finally happens. The theme has some similarities with Kareena & Shahid starrer 'Jab We Met'

The essence is, in the movie, Sasirekha Parinayam doesn’t happen as planned. As is the movie release ;)

Neetu Chandra Vs Rajashekhar

Do you remember this petite beauty in Shekhar Kammula’s Godavari? She is Neetu Chandra, the upcoming actress from Patna, Bihar. She played the role of second heroine, Rajeswari, the cousin (maradalu) of hero Sumanth. Throughout the movie, Godavari, she will be in a dilemma whether to marry the hero or not.

Being in dilemma seems to carry into the real life for this heroine. Neetu Chandra is currently in a dilemma on whether to sue hero Rajashekhar and his producer wife Jeevitha for the alleged harassment that she faced at the hands of the actor and producer in their current film shooting of Satyameva Jayathe

Neetu Chandra alleges that, actor Rajashekhar and Jeevitha harassed her. She claims that the actor came drunk to the sets and abused Neetu. She claims that when she was sick, running high fever and was unable to even stand, the actor and producer dragged her to the sets and forced her to act in front of the camera. So, finally, she had to run away from the shooting. She is currently talking to her lawyers on how to sue Jeevitha and Rajashekhar

Reacting to the allegations; Jeevitha Rajashekhar, the producer of the movie Satyameva Jayathe, rubbished the allegations. She accused that the upcoming heroine is unprofessional towards her work. Jeevitha says that, Neetu demands air tickets and star hotel accommodation to all her assistants. Further, Neetu & assistants demand travel by Jet Airways only and not through low cost airlines. Jeevitha alleges that, Neetu already took all the remuneration and is now demanding more for the remaining schedules.

Jeevitha also adds that Neetu has a history of troubling the producers. Neetu seems to have troubled Shekhar Kammula during the Godavari Shooting. In fact, Jeevitha booked Neetu, as they were looking for a heroine who is not busy and who can cooperate to the fullest. But, it seems the trouble started on the day one of the engagement itself, when Neetu arrived for photo session. Jeevitha couldn’t cancel the heroine as all the other schedules are decided by then.

Jeevitha agrees that, as the heroine threw tantrums to complete the last 2-3 shots on the pretext of ill health, the producer chided her to get up and complete the task at hand and then go take a leave forever. Otherwise, it would have been a herculean task to reschedule the 2-3 simple shots and impossible to get all the call sheets of all the characters & technicians who are involved in the shooting. Jeevitha advises that such an adamant and non cooperative behavior is not good for an aspiring artist like Neetu Chandra

So, what is the truth in this new controversy? What can we say??

Satyameva Jayathe!!

Telugu, The Ajanta Language

While reflecting on the movie Vinayakudu, more than the acting skills of the hero, I liked his name Krishnudu :) It indeed is a pure Telugu name. The Nouns in Telugu language normally end with a Vowel. That means, “Ram” is not Telugu. It should be “Ramudu” – Like “Kodanda Ramudu”, “Yanamala Ramakrishnudu”. And it is apt that the movie name is "Vinayakudu" and not "Vinayak" or "Ganesh"

As the English & Hindi words started modifying the urban nomenclature, the Telugu smell is slowly going away from our names these days. The “Halant” (words ending with a Consonant) or "Pollu Hallu" are common in other languages in India. For instance: Ram, Kishan, Mahesh, Raman, Rahul, and many other common names are Halant. But the words ending with Vowel (Acchu + Anta = Ajanta) are unique to Telugu. i.e. Rama/Ramudu, Krishna/Krishnudu, Maheshwara, Ramana etc.

That’s why Telugu is called the Ajantha Language. On that note, Italian is a similar Ajanta Language. That’s why, Telugu is the Italian of East.

Nandi Awards as a Congress Election Rally

I was appalled to see the Nandi Awards today. There is little to celebrate Telugu cinema there. It was all about praising YS Rajasekhar Reddy and his Congress Party.

For once, I doubted whether I tuned into the election rallies which were happening every other day these days.

Heroes Mahesh Babu and Nagarjuna were liberal in praising the chief minister YSR for all those things that he did. But, full marks go to hero Mohan Babu.

Mohan Babu who is known for his uncontrollable public utterances, went on to say that, “everybody is thinking that it is a Congress’ election rally. But its not! All these people who came to this event came here to display their affection on their dear leader, YSR. Nobody in the past has done this much to the Telugu Cinema as our CM YSR did. On that count, we all should applaud once more to our beloved CM”

So, are the decks clear for Mohan Babu too to join Congress?

My Name is Ram G Varma, I am a Psycho!

Oh! Boy, how did I miss this news?

A friend of mine told me that, couple of days back, there was a public gathering of all those frustrated with repeated torturous movies of RGV. They all announced a new movie with a title “Naa Peru Ram G Varma” with a caption “Nenoka Psycho Ni!” (My Name is Ram G Varma – I am a Psycho). They went on to shoot couple of scenes for this movie on this occasion.

The guest speaker at this gathering is the Censor Board Member Shobha Rani. She seems to have given an animated speech on the changing values of mainstream Cinema. She is very critical about Ram Gopal Varma’s mindless movies and their effect on the ordinary movie goers.

Apparently, all this is a reaction to the repeated horror movies that RGV is unleashing on to the Telugu cine goers. The last nail in the coffin was RGV’s new venture announced last week. RGV’s next project titled “Raktha Charitra”, is a chronicle of blood and gore of faction ridden Rayala Seema region of Andhra Pradesh. RGV visited wellknown factionist families over the past few weeks and noted down their versions to shape his story.

Now, we have to wait and see which of these two movies will draw more crowds!

Just looking at the titles, I’m game to spend my 3 hrs of time for a matinee show of “Naa Peru Ram G Varma, Neno Psycho Ni” than wasting my time on the chronicle of blood called “Raktha Charitra”
